This is a member of the Owl Butterfly subfamily. The owl butterflies are in the genus Caligo. This is Eryphanis ployxenes. We have been calling it the false owl, but that's not a widely standardized name. In the photo directly below this one, the butterfly on the left is Caligo memnon and the one on the right is E. polyxenes. If you can ever get a photo of a male with its wings open, the upper side of the wings is electric purple.
